Who needs to register for sales tax?
Manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, retailers and others supplying taxable goods must consider registration under the Sales Tax Act, 1990. Whether you are required depends on your activity and turnover. A business that sells only services usually deals with a provincial authority instead; see provincial sales tax on services (PRA, SRB, KPRA, BRA). Registering voluntarily can help you claim input tax and deal with larger buyers.
STRN registration in Pakistan, GST and sales tax: what is the difference?
STRN is the registration number. GST is a term used in other countries and colloquially in Pakistan. The federal tax on goods is called sales tax. If you searched for GST registration in Pakistan, this is the process you need.
How does sales tax registration work?
- Have your NTN and IRIS login ready (NTN registration in Pakistan).
- Apply for sales tax registration on IRIS with business details, address, bank account and activity.
- FBR may verify the premises. Keep utility bills and rent or ownership papers available.
- Once approved, you receive your STRN and can issue tax invoices.
Sales tax return filing in Pakistan: what do you do each month?
Registered persons file a monthly sales tax return declaring output tax on sales and input tax on purchases, and pay the difference. Missed or wrong returns can lead to penalties and blocked invoices, so keep purchase and sales invoices organised.
Import export registration with FBR
Importers and exporters need an NTN and, for most trading, sales tax registration, and they also register with Pakistan Customs for clearance. Requirements differ by activity. Confirm current customs requirements with Pakistan Customs before you ship.
Once you are registered, a return is due every month. Sales tax return filing in Pakistan explains Annex-C, nil returns and the usual dates.
