What do you need before you file an income tax return online in Pakistan?
Online tax filing in Pakistan happens entirely on IRIS, and FBR tax filing is free for the taxpayer. Have these ready:
- An NTN (for individuals this is your CNIC) and IRIS login. If you have neither, see NTN registration in Pakistan and FBR IRIS login and registration help.
- Income records: salary certificate or payslips, rent agreements, business accounts, or foreign remittance details.
- Tax already deducted at source during the year (salary deductions, bank and utility deductions).
- Bank account details and a list of assets and liabilities for the wealth statement.
How to file an income tax return online on IRIS, step by step
- Log in at iris.fbr.gov.pk with your CNIC (individuals) or NTN (companies and AOPs).
- Open the income tax return for the correct tax year. Tax year 2026 covers 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026.
- Enter income under each head: salary, business, property, capital gains or other sources.
- Add deductions, tax credits and tax already withheld.
- Complete the wealth statement of assets and liabilities that accompanies most individual returns.
- Check the computed tax. Pay any balance through the e-payment option on IRIS or a bank challan.
- Submit, then download and keep the acknowledgment. Filing on time is what places you on the Active Taxpayer List; see how to become a tax filer in Pakistan.
Income tax return filing in Pakistan: who must file, and who should even if they owe nothing?
Individuals must file when their income passes the exempt threshold. For salaried people that threshold is Rs 600,000 a year for tax year 2027. The law can also require a return from people who own certain assets or meet other conditions in section 114 of the Income Tax Ordinance, so do not assume you are exempt. An AOP, such as a partnership firm, must file regardless of income.
Even when you owe nothing, filing a nil return is how you stay a filer and keep lower withholding rates. See non-filer tax rates in Pakistan for why that matters.
Wealth statement filing in Pakistan: what is it, and is it filed with the return?
A wealth statement lists your assets and liabilities at the end of the tax year, such as property, vehicles, investments, cash and loans. It must reconcile with your income and last year's statement. Unexplained increases in wealth are one of the most common triggers for an FBR query, so keep purchase and sale records.
AOP tax return in Pakistan: how do you file an AOP or business return?
An association of persons, such as a partnership firm or family business, files its own return under its own NTN and lists each partner's share. Business income needs accounts: sales, expenses and stock. Keep invoices and bank statements for at least the period FBR can review. If you also sell goods or services, check sales tax registration in Pakistan (STRN). Company returns are covered in corporate tax consultant services in Pakistan.
Online tax filing or a consultant: which is right for you?
Salaried with one employer and no other income: filing yourself is realistic. Freelancer, landlord, business owner, overseas Pakistani or anyone with a notice: professional help usually pays for itself. See freelancer and IT exporter tax filing in Pakistan and overseas Pakistani tax filing and NRP NTN for those cases, and salary and income tax calculator for Pakistan to estimate salary tax first.
Tax refund in Pakistan: how do you claim excess tax withheld?
A tax refund in Pakistan arises when tax withheld during the year exceeds your final liability. You claim it through your return, and you need records of every deduction. Refunds can take time and FBR may ask for supporting documents.
