Active Taxpayer List check: how to see if you are a filer

To do an active taxpayer list check, look up your CNIC or NTN on FBR's ATL verification page, or use the SMS service FBR publishes for ATL status. If your name appears, you are a filer. If not, you are treated as a non-filer until you file your return.

How do you check filer status by CNIC?

  1. Use FBR's official ATL and online verification pages, reached through iris.fbr.gov.pk.
  2. Enter your 13-digit CNIC without dashes. Companies and AOPs enter their NTN.
  3. Read the result: Active means you are on the list.

FBR has also published an SMS method, which is to send ATL followed by your CNIC to 9966. Confirm the current method on FBR's site, since services change. We do not run a live lookup on this website, so you always see FBR's own answer.

NTN verification in Pakistan: online NTN verification by CNIC

Use FBR's online verification with the CNIC or NTN. It shows whether the number is registered and to whom, which is useful before you trade with a business. Registration status and filer status are different: an NTN can exist while the holder is not on the ATL.

What does the result mean?

ActiveYou filed the required return and are on the list.Keep filing on time each year.
Inactive or not foundYou are registered but not on the list, or not registered at all.Register if needed, then file. See below.

Not on the ATL: how do you get on it?

Register for an NTN if you have none (NTN registration in Pakistan), file the return for the relevant tax year (income tax filing in Pakistan), and pay any surcharge the law requires for late filers. The full route is in how to become a tax filer in Pakistan. Updates to the list are not instant, so keep your filing acknowledgment as proof.

Why am I still not on the ATL after filing?

  • The list has not updated yet. FBR updates the ATL periodically, so there can be a gap after you file. Keep your acknowledgment.
  • You filed for the wrong tax year or the return is incomplete. Open the filing in IRIS and check that it shows as submitted for the right year.
  • Your CNIC and NTN details do not match. A mismatch between your CNIC, your NTN record and your profile can keep the status from showing.
  • You filed after the due date. Late filers may have to pay a surcharge before they are added. The amount is set by FBR, so confirm it in IRIS.

If it has been more than a few weeks and nothing has changed, message us with the tax year you filed for and we will help you work out which of these it is. To see what staying off the list costs, read filer vs non-filer in Pakistan.
